Biography

Nile Rodgers is one of music's most iconic and enduring forces — a songwriter, composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist whose work as a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, multiple Grammy Award winner, and unparalleled musical innovator has stretched across generations and cultures.

As co-founder of CHIC alongside legendary bassist Bernard Edwards, they built a musical vocabulary that didn't just top charts — it reshaped genres.

Together, they created "Le Freak," the biggest-selling single in Atlantic Records history, and "Good Times," which laid the DNA for hip-hop itself, directly inspiring the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight"— the biggest-selling 12-inch single in recorded music history. Nile's legacy continued to grow decades after CHIC first redefined the dancefloor: he made history as the first creator to receive a Lifetime Achievement Grammy and a competitive Grammy in the same year, earning Best R&B Song for his contribution to Beyoncé's global smash "Cuff It."

Through The CHIC Organization, Nile and Bernard gave the world anthems that have never stopped playing — "We Are Family" for Sister Sledge, "I'm Coming Out" for Diana Ross. Nile's productions and collaborations for David Bowie (Let's Dance), Madonna (Like A Virgin), Duran Duran (Notorious), Daft Punk (Random Access Memories), and many other artists, have sold over 500+ million albums and 75+ million singles worldwide.

Far from resting on that legacy, Nile continues to operate at the cutting edge — collaborating with Avicii, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, LE SSERAFIM, Damiano David and Daddy Yankee on some of the most forward-thinking music of recent years. His reach extends well beyond recorded music, with a deep catalog spanning film and interactive media — from scoring the 1988 blockbuster Coming to America to producing both volumes of the landmark Halo 2 Original Soundtrack, a watershed moment for video game music, among many others. He also brought his storytelling to the airwaves as host of the award-winning Apple Music podcast Deep Hidden Meaning, offering listeners a rare inside look at the craft and philosophy behind some of music's most beloved songs. He served as the inaugural Chief Creative Advisor for Abbey Road Studios and currently chairs the Songwriters Hall of Fame, an institution dedicated to recognizing the songwriters of the past, championing those shaping music today, and elevating the voices who will define the next era of music.

A lifelong believer in music's power to bring people together, Nile has stood at the center of defining humanitarian moments in music history — from Live Aid in 1985 to countless benefit concerts and global causes since. That same spirit took on new form after 9/11, when Nile co-founded the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF), transforming the classic anthem "We Are Family" written for Sister Sledge into a global movement and mission for unity. Inspired by Nile's roots as a young activist, WAFF takes an innovative approach to championing the next generation of global young change makers — fostering intergenerational collaboration and giving them the mentorship, resources, and stage to build a more just and united world. His humanitarian work was recognized in 2024 with the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award.

Nile Rodgers & CHIC remain one of the most electrifying live acts on the planet. Decades after those first iconic grooves were laid down, Nile continues to take the stage globally, delivering performances that are equal parts celebration and revelation. Whether headlining major festivals, iconic venues, or sold-out arenas around the world, Nile Rodgers & CHIC bring the full force of that legendary catalog to life night after night — proving that great music doesn't age, it only grows. At Glastonbury 2025, The Guardian said it best: "you can't argue with the effects of the greatest pop music ever made on the crowd."
